hi everyone,
my university does not currently have a cheer team, and i'd be interested in starting one up.
i'd happily do coaching courses, promote the team, etc, but i'm wondering if anyone has any other advice?
i've got a few years university cheer experience already, so feel like i know a lot of how it works, but of course not everything!
any advice appreciated ♥

The main thing is that for insurance purposes you'll probably need a qualified coach at every session and until the club is set up and has members often students unions won't pay for this. When I set mine up I had to pay my own coaching course fees.

Any maybe consider getting a more experienced coach/choreographer in to help with the routine. That saves a lot of money rather than paying for a coach every week, and you can really tell at comp which uni teams have got help with choreo or not.

thanks for your advice!! i thought i might end up paying for my own coaching course fees so that's not too off-putting.
i know a few coaches so hopefully be able to get someone in a couple of times to help with choreo! thanks for your advice !!

When we first set ours up we had to set it up as a society and not a sports team, we had to get qualified coaches in to coach every week and we did a start up fee of £40 per person which cover coaches fee for the semesters, then after we started doing well we went to the sports department and put in a request to be an official sports team. After that they agreed to pay for a coach but the coach still has to pay for insurance but you can get one specifically for university cheer that works out at around £5/10 a month. Or you could get students to go and do their qualifications depends where you're based :)
